Bangkok Airport Train (Rail Link) Rss feed Twitter button Facebook button

As the population of Bangkok grows steadily, traffic congestion is a huge problem. A great way to avoid Bangkok traffic, when going to and from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, is by taking the Airport Rail Link.

With only 26 minutes travel time to cover the full distance (28.6 kilometers), and the reasonable 45-baht fare, Airport Rail Link has become really popular among foreign travelers and Thais alike.

This post offers you an introduction to Airport Rail Link with its route map, timetable, how to connect to the BTS (skytrain) and MRT (subway), as well as other helpful tips.

The Airport Rail Link is a commuter train between Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Phaya Thai Station, in central Bangkok. It originally featured 2 lines, The City Line and the Express Line.

At present, The City Line is the only line in operation and it stops at 6 stations between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Phaya Thai Station; including Lat Krabang, Ban Thap Chang, Hua Mak, Ramkhamhaeng, Makkasan and Ratchaprarop.

The Airport Rail Link is really practical for passengers who arrive at or depart from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, since the station is right on the underground floor (B FL)of the Passenger Terminal. The train operates daily from 6:00 a.m. to midnight and it leaves every 15 minutes. Here you can find out about the travel time and the fares.

Since the Airport Rail Link connects to the BTS (skytrain) and the MRT (subway), it's convenient for you to travel to different parts of Bangkok, without getting stuck in traffic.

This is a link to the route maps for the Airport Rail Link, BTS (skytrain), MRT (subway) as well as The Chao Phraya Express Boat.

Connecting To BTS (Skytrain)

To transfer to BTS, get off at Phaya Thai Station and follow the walkway to Phaya Thai BTS Station. Here is the BTS Timetable. When you are traveling in the opposite direction, take exit 5 from the Phaya Thai BTS Station to get to the Airport Rail Link Station.

Connecting To MRT (Subway)

If you want to connect to MRT, take Airport Rail Link to Makkasan Station. There is a connecting walkway to MRT Phetchburi Station, via exit 1. MRT operates daily, every 5-10 minutes, from 6:00 a.m. to midnight.

Helpful Tips

The automatic token/travel card dispensers found at the Airport Rail Link, BTS and MRT stations, all accept 1, 5 and 10 baht coins. Since only some dispensers accept banknotes, it's a good idea to have coins handy. It's possible to change to coins at the manned ticket booths, however, the line may be quite long.

Airport Rail Link and MRT use tokens, while BTS uses travel cards.

Enjoy the ride!
